Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Cathay different from other lacquer or Urushi pen brands?
Each Cathay pen is handcrafted by a single master artisan — from selecting the ebonite base to sanding, lacquering, engraving, and final polish. Every stroke of Urushi, Chinkin, or Makie is done entirely by hand, giving each piece its own grain, glow, and individuality. No two pens will ever be identical.
Are all Cathay pens made with real Urushi lacquer?
Yes. Every Urushi pen uses natural tree lacquer applied in 15–30 layers.
Each layer is dried, polished, and recoated in the traditional “shade drying” method, resulting in the depth, warmth, and durability Urushi is known for.
Do you have a physical store where I can see your pens in person?
Cathay is available exclusively through select authorized retail partners where you can explore our pens in person:
- Fountain Pen Hospital (New York, USA)
- Papier Plume (Louisiana, USA)
- Aesthetic Bay (Singapore)
In addition, our representatives attend pen shows throughout the year, offering the opportunity to experience our products firsthand. Upcoming show appearances will be announced on our website and social media platforms.
For customers interested in nib customizations, Cathay partners with Nibs.com, where you may request specialized grinds or adjustments for your pen. Though not a physical storefront, Nibs.com provides expert nib work for those seeking a personalized writing experience.
Why do Cathay pens vary slightly in pattern, color, or finish?
Because each pen is made by a single artisan using layered Urushi and hand-applied techniques, natural variations occur. These variations are a hallmark of authentic craftsmanship and represent the uniqueness of your individual piece.
How long does it take to craft or fulfill a Cathay order?
In-stock items ship quickly, but handcrafted items may take additional time depending on artisan availability and the complexity of the work. Urushi production in particular requires slow curing for durability and luster.
Rest assured, our team will promptly reach out to customers whose orders exceed the estimated processing time. For more information about the way we process orders, please refer to our Shipping Policy.
Do you accept returns on Cathay products?
We accept returns on unused, non-customized pens in their original packaging. However, because Cathay pens are handcrafted works of art, custom orders, personalized items, and made-to-order pieces are not eligible for return.
Sale items, opened inks and gift cards are also non-returnable. For more information about our return process, please refer to our Return & Refund Policy.
What should I do if my pen arrives damaged or incorrect?
Please inspect your order as soon as it arrives and contact us immediately if anything is damaged, defective, or incorrect. We will review the issue and make it right as quickly as possible.
Are Cathay pens considered “custom products”?
Most Cathay pens are handcrafted in small batches, but only pens specifically made-to-order or personalized (such as engraved pieces, customer-requested artwork, or pens ordered with nib customizations) are classified as custom and are non-returnable.
Which countries do you ship to?
We ship worldwide. International shipping rates and delivery times vary by destination and will be shown at checkout. Please note that customs fees or import taxes may apply depending on your country's regulations.
How should I care for my Urushi fountain pen?
Keep it away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and chemicals. Wipe the surface with a soft microfiber cloth when needed. Avoid abrasive materials, as Urushi is organic and can be sensitive during its early months of curing.
Authentic Urushi lacquer develops a richer glow as it reacts to your environment and touch. This natural “treasure glow” is part of the material’s heritage and beauty, and it is a sign of genuine, high-quality Urushi.
Are the artwork and designs the same for every pen in a series?
No. While themes may be shared (such as dragons, landscapes, or classical motifs), every piece is executed by hand and carries its own distinct pattern, brushstroke, and engraving. This ensures each pen is a one-of-a-kind collectible.
Our nibs also feature exclusive Cathay engravings and designs that reflect East-Asian artistry. Each nib is carefully tuned for smooth, reliable writing that complements the craftsmanship of the body.
